Camping in Del Valle Regional Park

Del Valle Regional Park
Livermore, California

Website: http://www.ebparks.org/parks/del_valle

What I liked:
- nice and clean facilities
- many hiking trails, varying levels of difficulty
- kid friendly
- spacious campsites, no close neighbors (Punta Vaca Campground)

Salt Point State Park

Location:
Salt Point State Park
25050 Highway One, Jenner, CA 95450
Gerstle Campground

Campground website:

Things to know about getting there:
Its about 150 miles from the South Bay area, it will take about 3:20 hrs if you have no traffic. We in the Bay know this is a joke, especially if traveling on Friday night, plan on closer to 4:45 hrs.

GPS isn't your friend, it will take you the long route on HWY 1, adding maybe a couple of hours of winding roads to your trip. If you're traveling at night, use a map instead (yes, a map) plot your course and follow it... you will thank me later.
Now if you're traveling during the day and have a spare couple of extra hours, take HWY 1 for sure. (who has extra time...?)

Challenge - When traveling West on HWY 116 past Duncan Mills, there is a fork in the road, which contains no indication of the cities found by taking one route vs the other.
Unfortunately, I chose to go straight. Wrong move.
I crossed the Russian River and came upon a restaurant called 'Russian House #1'. If you're heading to Salt Point and you happen to see this restaurant, do yourself a favor... turn around and go back to the break in the road, this time selecting the other way.

Campground selection:
If you like privacy, the best sites are 6 / 9 / 10 / 14.
If you like really woodsy sites, 19-25 are very cool.
Sites 5 and 10 are right next to the Gerstle Cove Trail (which is about a half mile to the cove)
Site 24 is close to the Woodside trail.

Now a little secret... there is an overflow parking area very near the beach. It is possible to stay there if you have a camper / RV (no tents). Didn't do this this time, but if I had known, I would have. It is beautiful and is very close to the Ocean. You can hear the waves crashing all night and day (if that is your thing).

Overall impressions:
1) Campground was very clean and accessible.
2) There are some amazing views of the Ocean (to be fair, this is true all along HWY 1)
3) The road to / from the campground is very windy, if it is raining / dark or you have a big vehicle / trailer, not very friendly traveling conditions.
